Author Interview with Jane Statlander-Slote, PhD Can you describe yourself for your readers? My friends describe me as a very creative, energetic, incisive, deep, highly intelligent, productive, articulate writer, thinker, film maker and speaker. How would you describe your soon-to-be-released work on Philip Roth? J.S. - This is a groundbreaking collection of psychoanalytically-themed, never- before published essays by some of the top Roth scholars that for the first time reveals aspects of Roth’s life and work that, in one collected volume, have never before been discussed. Can you tell us about the way of thinking that influences your writing. I love to live the life of the mind and imagination. Are there any idiosyncrasies about yourself that you would like to share? I am highly introverted and hate hobbies. What do you love about writing and what has been the most difficult part of putting a book like this together? What I love about writing is the process of expressing and articulating my feelings and thoughts. The hardest part of writing a book is finding the blocks of time to execute it. Can you describe part of the creative process of ideas for your books and films? I am involuntarily forever churning inside me ideas for books and films. Do you welcome interaction with your readers? I love contact between me and my readers and to respond to any questions they might want to pose to me. What have been some of the influences in your life in the writing aspect of you career? From the age of about ten years old I set out to read the giants of psychology, philosophy, history, literature and the arts in general, viewed very much dance, art and other of the performing arts. Also very important for the development of my life was that my mother took me several times a week to the movies from the time I was a very, very young child which greatly informed my creative, literary and perceptual orientations. I have been spending the rest of my life mulling, chewing on and digesting all that I read and saw from a very young age. Perhaps the greatest intellectual influence in my life is my husband, Michael Slote, the eminent ethicist and philosopher with whom I have a daily intellectual dialogue. Can you give us an idea of your schedule as it pertains to your writing and filmmaking? My husband and I are very early risers----usually between one or two a.m.--- and people are amazed to receive email correspondence from us through the very early hours of the day. I am always working on multiple things at the same time: I am writing, about to write, or involved with writing three books, run a film production company, am studying to receive an M.F.A. in film, working on three film projects, teaching, spending time in the early morning reading War and Peace aloud with my husband, traveling, delivering papers at conferences, spending time with our children, keeping up with email correspondence, spending loving time with my witty, brilliant, and funny husband, taking care of a house, cooking delicious and healthy meals, teaching-----have I left anything out? Jane Statlander-Slote has authored three scholarly books on the subject of Philip Roth and is completing a biographical documentary on the subject, with more documentaries on unrelated serious topics in the burner. She has also published a collection of her poems, and a work of autobiographical-fiction.
